I’m Not Blond – So What?

Elkar, 2004

ilehoria-euAmira wants to be blond, the way movie stars are. Long before coming to Europe, she went every week to the movies with her aunt. After they left the movie theater they’d go to the seaside and stand looking out toward Europe. Now she writes letters to her aunt from the other side of the sea.

Amira has come from Morocco, like many other people. She has had the chance, though, to tell her history, her dreams, and her experiences, via Kirmen Uribe. Here, Amira makes us see how often she, like many others who’ve come from foreign lands, remembers her country and the people she loves there. How at one time she used to look to Europe with her aunt and how today she looks to her country and her memories in her reflections.

And she tells us of the sorrows and difficulties in her daily life, her dreams and desires. She makes us see that differences, like many other things, can be funny, too, and enriching, since they offer us new ways to look at the world.
